Composer/producer Oscar Fogelström’s soundtrack for Äkta Skräck draws on the film’s 15th-century witch-burning setting with a sound that’s earthy, ancient, and eerily otherworldly. Built around texture rather than melody, the score blends Scandinavian folk colors—vevlira, nyckelharpa, mouth harp—with deep, resonant horns to create a dark, timeworn atmosphere.
Nature is treated as a character throughout, with layered forest ambiences, struck wood, and—most centrally—fire: a recurring motif tied to both the victims of the witch hunts and the presence of the old witch who reveals herself through flame. Ghostly vocal layers echo like lingering spirits, shaping a tense, immersive soundscape that now arrives as a standalone listening experience.
